Say Hi to Knockree youth hostel

02.05.2019

Next stop in our series presenting some of the countless youth hostels of Hostelling International, a non-profit organisation that manages a federation of non-profit youth hostel associations, is the Knockree youth hostel in Ireland.

Why you should go

Located just off the famous Wicklow Way trail, Knockree Youth Hostel is one of An Óige – Irish Youth Hostel Association’s most luxurious and modern hostels. The hostel appeals to all kinds of travellers and guests, from those looking for a family break to walking and hiking enthusiasts.

Knockree Hostel is situated in a unique location in Wicklow’s Glencree Valley facing Maulin Mountain to the south-east and the Sugarloaf Mountain to the east. The Wicklow Way passes through the land below the hostel, along the banks of the picturesque Glencree River. So, no matter what time of the year you might decide to stay, you are guaranteed to have beautiful scenery and a relaxing stay.

At just over an hour from Dublin, this hostel is popular with Dubliners looking to get away from the city, into the hills and back to nature! Surprisingly for its proximity to Dublin, it is an ideal rural retreat for those who want to ‘get away from it all’.

The hostel in a nutshell

Knockree youth hostel is An Oige's newest hostel building. It re-opened in April 2008 after a total rebuild. The original hostel, which opened its doors in 1938 was an 18th century farmhouse, which is incorporated into the rebuild.

Knockree youth hostel boasts varied accommodation (en-suite, family, wheelchair accessible, dorms and meeting/conference room). The hostel also includes a large-capacity dining hall and restaurant for groups who pre-book, as well as a TV-relaxation room with a log fire that you can cosy up beside for a romantic setting.

Feeling peckish during your stay? Then not to worry as Knockree has you covered. The hostel serves a large selection of breakfasts which can be ordered at check-in, as well as lunches and evening meals that can also be pre-ordered. Or if you’re just randomly feeling hungry, there is a mini-shop located on the premises which supplies food, drinks and toiletries.

If you’re looking for adventure activities, the hostel’s offer includes pony trekking, mountain biking, archery, low ropes, target shooting, team tasks and orienteering.
