Say Hi to HI RED Mountain, Nowhere Special Hostel

02.01.2020

In the new year, we continue our series presenting some of the countless youth hostels of Hostelling International, a non-profit organisation that manages a federation of non-profit youth hostel associations. Appropriate to the season, why not enjoy a stay at the HI RED Mountain in Canada.

Why you should go

If you’ve never been to Canada, why not visit Canada’s westernmost province, British Columbia, where the mountains meet the ocean and enjoy some real winter with cold temperatures and snow and all its fun activities. HI RED Mountain, Nowhere Special Hostel was custom-built at the bottom of one of Canada's best-kept-secret ski resorts in southeastern British Columbia on the west side of the country. RED Mountain is located in the small and picturesque town of Rossland, a former gold mining town that is now an outdoor adventurer's paradise. RED Mountain Ski Resort is home to over 2,600 square kilometres of ski terrain and gets, on average, over seven metres of snow each year. There are even reported Sasquatch sightings in this region!

The hostel in a nutshell

Just a two-minute walk from the chairlift and purpose-built in 2018 for today’s fuss-free traveller, this modern hostel puts RED Mountain on the radar of young and young-at-heart adventurers who value community and connection. Why not kick back after a day on the slopes in the comfy lounge or around one of the outdoor fire pits?

This Canadian hostel was named after a legendary technical ski run on the mountain and boasts varied accommodation (4-bed rooms, private ensuite rooms, private quad room, family ensuite rooms, a 10-bed private room, as well as 2 wheelchair-accessible units), a tech-friendly community lounge with mountain views and a discount on lift tickets. But the real fun happens in the common areas: a large fully-equipped kitchen with a funky dining area, a comfy lounge, and a year-round patio with two outdoor grills and a fire pit. You can store all your gear (bikes, skis, snowboards) in the hostel's gear storage room.

The town of Rossland is a five-minute drive from the hostel, where you'll find shops and restaurants and get access to a ton of other outdoor adventures in the area.
